State Candidate Fundraising
Candidates and potential candidates for state offices that won't be contested until 2010, 2012, or even 2014 are already raising money at prodigious rates. More than $60 million dollars has been raised for races to be held one, three or even five years in the future and many candidates are raising money into multiple committees for different offices at the same time - most of these are current officeholders.
While this practice is legal, it can often be difficult to ascertain the total amount raised or spent by a given candidate because of their ability to maintain multiple committees.
Once candidates for state office raise $50,000 or more in a single committee, they must electronically file periodic disclosure statements with the office of the Secretary of State (SOS), for each committee they control - even their committees for local office.
Commission staff culled data from these reports and created this one-stop location to provide the media and public with a more complete overview of candidate campaign activity in an easily understood format. The charts below identify all of the committees controlled by each statewide candidate, senate candidate and assembly candidate, and the money raised and spent by each of these committees during the first six months of 2009 (as electronically filed with the SOS) for elections in 2010, 2012 or 2014. If a committee is not listed below it did not electronically file a report.
Information regarding federal candidates was compiled from reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC). For more detailed information on contributions received and expenditures made for each committee listed please review the information available on the SOS or FEC website, as applicable.
Note: Reports are in Excel (xls) and PDF format. You will need applications capable of viewing these file formats in order to access the reports. You can obtain Adobe Reader for free at http://adobe.com.
